New Jersey’s most popular politician is Senate President Richard Codey, according to a new Zogby International poll released today. Codey, who served as Governor from November 2004 to January 2006, has a 66%-17% favorable rating among New Jersey likely voters.
Gov. Jon Corzine is at 55%-42%, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg is at 52%-35%, U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez is at 43%-33%, and U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie is at 42%-13%.
Codey is considered a possible candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 2009, either for an open seat if Corzine does not seek re-election, or in a primary against Corzine. Among Democratic likely voters, Codey’s favorable rating is 71%-12%; Corzine is at 73%-23%.
The Zogby poll was conducted for Garden State Equality.

Is it April fools? Who did to pollsters ask the Democrats themselves?
Dick Codey has the wool pulled over the eyes of the Star Ledger. For some unknown reason The Star Ledger is trying to write fluff peices on how Codey is some Trenton outsider and a reformer. Dick Codey has been in Trenton for 30 years the last ten in leadership positions. HE IS THE PROBLEM!
What has Jon Corzine done in the last 10 days to reverse his negative polling? Have our taxes decreased and I have not been informed as of yet?
This poll is as suspect as Joe Cryan and Karen Golding being engaged.
CODEY IS AN IDIOT
Dick had the luxury of following Jim McGreevey. Anyone would be better after that debacle. He's popular because he didn't want to sleep with men. Dick Codey has never undergone the scrutiny of a statewide race. What about all those insurance contracts? Has anyone ever really taken a hard look at Codey's background, finances and political deals? How about all the corrupt Senators from HIS caucus that are being led off to jail? Did Dick know what they were doing and look the other way - or is he incompetent and didn't realize what Bryant, James and Coniglio were doing under his nose with our tax dollars? Some great leader he is. The windbag tells a few jokes and the whole press corps laughs and slaps him on the back.
On the right track, but a little naive
It's not the jokes, folks. The bargain between the Ledger, the press corps and codey much more nefarious. It's the same as the bargain between the Ledger, the press corps and Christie:
Keeping plying the beast with inside information, and there will be no need to look into all the hospital insurance contracts or the hospital/client benefiting-legislation that got through the Senate.
Codey
Zoffinger is in the 17%, as are a lot of people in the political world that Codey has crossed at one time.
Codey is the ultimate back-room NJ politician.
