Where are they now: the kid who beat Gordon MacInnes in 1997

Time Magazine's Marc Halperin lists the "five most important people in presidential politics who aren't running for President."  #4 on the list is a New Jerseyan, Mike DuHaime, the national political director of John McCain's presidential campaign.

Gordon was clearly as much a one-term fluke as the four Hudson Republicans elected in 1985.

Is he the genius who advised Guiliani to skip the early primaries and place all of his eggs in Florida?

And was he steering the McCain ship this week?

With performances like this, Corzine is probably wishing that DuHaime will be hired by Christie in '09.

Mike is excellent.


Mike DuHaime is one of the best political operatives in the nation. He has represented several Morris County elected officials and is well respected. He was trained by Mark and Eva Campbell, two of the best in the business.

Who was the kid who got MacInnes elected?


Getting Democrat Gordon MacInnes elected in 1993 was the amazing thing, considering the district has an average Democratic performance of 35 percent.

After being carried into the Assembly in the Democratic landslide of 1973, MacInnes was swept aside two years later.

It would be difficult to imagine a Democrat lasting long in that district and there was no landslide in 1993 -- a year when many people still wanted NJ 'Florio Free' -- so the person who decided to put MacInnes up against Republican Sen. John Dorsey is the one who deserves credit for achieving a minor miracle,
