If Paul Sarlo becomes the new Senate Judiciary Chairman when John Adler leaves for Washington in January, Senate President Richard Codey will need to name a new Chairman of the Senate Labor Committee. The two other Democrats on the panel now are Frederick Madden and Sandra Cunningham. Statehouse watchers say that one could be a no-brainer: Codey will pick Cunningham, his ally, and not Madden, who is aligned with Codey's rival, South Jersey Democratic Chairman George Norcross.
Madden, elected in 2003, is the most senior Senate Democrat without a committee chairmanship, followed by Loretta Weinberg, who entered the Senate in 2005.
One more thing on the Codey vs. Norcross rivalry: Codey's party at the League of Municipalities convention in Atlantic City this week was completely overshadowed by the bash thrown -- not coincidentally at the same time on the same night -- by Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney. The consensus is that Sweeney had five times as many people as Codey did.
But Codey probably doesn't care. Earlier this month, when Codey and Sweeney faced off in Bayonne, Codey was the winner. The Senate President actively supported Mark Smith for Mayor, while Sweeney played a role in Patrick Conaghan's unsuccessful campaign.

Dark Days for Dick
Codeys pettiness here will get him nowhere. My contacts up in Essex say Dick is in political retreat and probably doesn't lead the Democratic field to replace Corzine.
As for Sandy, will she back the irrascable Anthony Chiappone again?
Wally's Weekly Codey Rip...
Since when has Wally Edge been George Norcross's online, anonymous hatchet man? Yet, it's almost become a weekly occurence for Codey to get toasted on this site, either on the Inside Edge, the PolitickerNJ poll, or some other feature.
This column cites NOBODY. It offers NOTHING in the way of evidence for the claims it makes. As far as we know, everybody referenced in here has an excellent working relationship, and can put the political pettiness aside for the greater good.
We need to get beyond stupid grammar-school language about whose party is bigger than whose, because that does nothing to fix the many problems in the State of New Jersey. Posts like this are evidence that Wally's obviously lost a step or two since the switch over to the Observer Group, and isn't capable of seeing the big picture through political conspiracy theories and whatever hidden agendas he might have...
So...
Apparently you can buy ad-space on PolitickerNJ. You can buy a news article that looks legit. And now, you can buy an Inside Edge post. Hope Wally gave George a good ad-rate... he must be hurting with the sale of Commerce these days...
And for what it's worth, if party attendance translated to votes at the polls, Doug Forrester would be US Senator and Governor by now. This is a pretty meaningless, ridiculous barometer of political juice in Jersey...

Don't understand any of this...
Can Codey raise monies and get people elected? if he can't do any of these things then he should be in seclusion but from what I've seen from NJ politics the last couple years, incumbency trumps message and money trumps everything.
Codey in trouble
He has alienated Nia Gill and now he is trying to get on Cunningham's good side. Remember however that Cunningham backed Sweeney last year when the battle for Majority leader was being waged. She is NOT in Codey's back pocket.
If Corzine leaves Codey is toast. He will not win a state wide primary. Sweeney has all of South Jersey and all of the Codey enemies in North Jersey.Sweeney will beat Codey.
If Corzine stays then the push will begin to remove Codey after this next session as Senate President.
I guess Codey's
staffers have some free time this afternoon...
Codey...
...ushered through more than 100 taxes, McGreevey's appointments, spending spikes, borrowing spikes (including $5 billion of borrowing for operating), and destructive economic policy. He created a slush fund that forced police chiefs throughout the State to waste their time filling out applications he had no intention of taking seriously. And he appointd people like Bryant and Coniglio as chairs of important committees. If he can hide that pathetic and shameful record behind a basketball and four jokes, he should be elected Presient.
Sweeney
That guy is a time bomb waiting to explode.....The dems would be remiss to put him at the helm. Only a matter of time before all his issues cause him to implode...
