WEBBER TOUTS CONGRESSIONAL EXPERIENCE, STILL AWAITS CASHA’S EXPLANATIONS

Morris Plains, NJ - Assembly candidate Jay Webber today issued the following statement in response to Assembly candidate Larry Casha’s remarks regarding Webber’s experience as a Capitol Hill staffer for former Congressman, now United States District Court Judge, William J. Martini.
I appreciate Larry's recognition that my experience as a budget staffer on Capitol Hill is an important aspect of this race. I am very proud of my service to Congressman Martini, the citizens of the Eighth Congressional District, and the 104th Congress, and to this day remain grateful for that opportunity. That Congress saw the first Republican majority in the House of Representatives in 40 years, and the first balanced budget in a generation. The Congressman, far from being a liberal, was an outspoken and effective leader not just on balancing the budget, but on illegal immigration and government reform as well. He was an excellent member of Congress, and he has continued to serve the public as a federal Judge who, among other accomplishments, has been tough on political corruption.

Where I disagreed with the Congressman as a staffer, especially on issues regarding the sanctity of human life, I expressed those disagreements privately at appropriate times. And despite those disagreements, I appreciate the Congressman's remarkable success as the only Republican to represent New Jersey’s Eighth Congressional District in the last 46 years. That success enabled a man like Congressman Henry Hyde to be the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee - there is no doubt that Congressman Martini's election over a liberal Democrat was a net triumph for the pro-life movement.

Larry, on the other hand, has opted to align himself with the most liberal of Republicans in situations where he could have made different choices that would have been more in line with the views he claims to hold now. For someone who touts his "experience" as one of the most important reasons the people should elect him, Larry needs to discuss the contradictions between his political experience and his newly professed views as a candidate. I would think he would welcome that opportunity, and Webber for Assembly has invited Larry to do so for many months now. So far Larry has declined, and instead has tried to muddy the waters by changing the subject. I take great pride in my past public service, and for the sake of the electorate, I hope Larry will be forthcoming with his long-overdue explanations soon.
