September 14, 2007- Morristown- Dana Wefer, Democratic candidate for State Assembly in the 25th district, commended Governor Corzine's signing of the autism bill package and criticized her incumbent opponents for voting against many of the bills.
"New Jersey should invest in autism research, treatment, and the integration of autistic individuals," Wefer said Friday. "Autistic individuals and their families are an important part of New Jersey and investment in them is an investment in New Jersey's economy and well-being," Wefer argued.
One of the bills that Wefer's incumbent opponents voted against was A-4058, which creates autism awareness for Emergency Medical Technicians, Police officers, and Firefighters. Wefer argues that this bill is important because knowing how to handle an emergency situation when an autistic person is the victim or in the vicinity is vital to the safety of the autistic individual, their family, and the emergency responder.
Assemblymen Merkt and Carroll were the only two legislators in the entire Assembly to vote against this bill. "Our police officers, firefighters and EMT's are providing a service to our communities and we need to ensure that they have all information to make their rescue efforts proceed as smoothly and safely as possible," Wefer said. "Voting against this bill was a vote against not only autistic individuals and their families, but also our first responders," she concluded.
Wefer, the sole female running for Assembly in Morris County this year, is running with Marshall Gates an attorney and former Roxbury councilman. Wefer ran for Freeholder last year and garnered 47% of the vote in the 25th district. She is running on a platform of fiscal and ethical responsibility and has emphasized her commitment to voter outreach.
