Either the Star Ledger’s sources have dried up along with leaks by prosecutors or the editors made a decision to sit on the news about the Union County subpoenas until after Election Day.
Let’s consider what we know.
The Ledger has broken the news about nearly every ongoing federal or state probe and subpoena issued over the last year.
At times, it seems the Ledger's front page stories have been delivered to our doorsteps before the prosecutor’s target letters have even reached the intended recipients.
So while rumors were circulating in
Union County that subpoenas had been delivered to some of its most powerful Democrat operatives, the Ledger apparently was clueless. That was until sometime last week. According to its own report, “(
Charlotte) DeFilippo confirmed the existence of five subpoenas that demand documents and information about her public and private business dealings. The contents of the subpoenas, which were served in September and October, were described by DeFilippo this week in an interview,” (Probe focuses on Union politicos), 11/9/07.Yet the story did not run until Friday
- - three days after the ballots were counted.Maybe
the Ledger's interview with DeFillippo took place after Election Day. Maybe there were no leaks from well-placed sources this time. Maybe Ledger staffers didn’t see a November 1st blog which all but confirmed the issuance of subpoenas: “Union County served with subpoenas,” http://countywatchers.blogspot.com/.Maybe.
