Whitman backs GOP candidates

Former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman today announced her support of a group of GOP legislative and local candidates who have been endorsed by the Republican Leadership Council. Whitman co-chairs the group with former U.S. Senator John Danforth and former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael Steele, and says the RLC will help the candidates with financial contributions and volunteer activity over the next few weeks.

“New Jerseyans are forced to deal with daily reports of corruption and fraud – if ever there was a time that our state needs the core Republican values of fiscal restraint and local control, now is that time,” said Whitman. “These candidates and incumbents are the kinds of leaders New Jersey needs to get our fiscal house back in order.”

Among the Whitman/RLC endorsed candidates: State Sens. Diane Allen and Sonny McCullough; Senate candidates Kip Bateman, Jennifer Beck, Mark Cimino, John Costello, Bob Martin; Assemblymen Peter Biondi; and Assembly candidates John Amodeo, Mary Pat Angelini, Caroline Casagrande, Denise Coyle, Nancy Griffin, Vince Polistina, and Brian Propp.

Whitman is also backing Bob Bostock, her former speechwriter, for Lawrence Councilman, Melanie Donohue for Toms River Councilwoman, Paul Duggan for Bergen County Freeholder, Patricia Koln for Warren County Clerk, Janice Mitchell Mintz for Mercer County Executive, Paul Marino for Gloucester County Freeholder, and Michael Vernotico for Mayor of Summit.

Even Whitman has Bailed on Asselta

Once again the decision to have Bill Pascoe as campaign manager has backfired on Asselta. Asselta has alienated many " New Jersey Republicans" by listening to his " outsider" campaign manager and forgetting his roots. This guy has turned off people throughout the State. His campaign guidance in the First District has been a disaster. Even the ex-Governor has made a point not to endorse him this time around. This has to be extremely embarrassing to this incumbent State Senator.

"fiscal responsibility" and Whitman don't go hand in hand

It strikes me as odd, even purposely disingenuous, that a governor who got us into this financial mess in the first place has the gall to suggest her vision of good governance somehow is equated with "fiscal restraint." Whitman left the state billions in debt from her raiding of the state pension fund and other moments of, shall we say, fiscal unrestraint, including iffy budget projectories.

Reporter Herb Jackson writes ""In 1997, then-Gov. Christine Todd Whitman (R) plugged a budget shortfall -- caused in part by her tax cuts -- by issuing $2.8 billion in bonds to cover long-term liabilities in the pension system. The bond proceeds were deposited into pension funds and then invested in the stock market just as the dot-com bubble began to inflate." Hence, forgive me if I take Whitman's selective amnesia about her own contributions to the state's fiscal crises as the real story.

Republicans endorsing Republicans

This is news? Are you kidding? What makes this group so special? Did they actually return the questionnaire? This should be filed under "if a tree falls in the forest..."

1st District Reality

What is left for Asselta? He brings in Giuliani, who is popular in New Jersey, but not in the 1st District and Giuliani spends all of his time speaking about himself instead of Asselta. Now he can't even get the endorsement of the last Republican Governor, despite the fact that she is endorsing some candidates who might not get 10% of the vote in their contests. Congressman LoBiondo has not campaigned with Asselta at all and , it is now obvious, he is avoiding him completely. Even some staunch Union allies such as the State Workers and PBA are turning their back on him. Asselta hired a couple of " big timers" to run his campaign and they have made mistake after mistake.  Maybe campaign manager Bill Pascoe, who has never won a campaign in New Jersey will give back a portion of his fee since he helped destroy the campaign with his bad ideas.

Whitman's not a Republican, Stupid!!

The Republican Leadership Council are too liberal to be Democrats in the South. Did you notice Christie Whitperson only endorsed the candidates that were endorsed by the RLC, not all the Republican Candidates?

The Republican Leadership Council is the cancer that is sucking the life out of the Republican Party. It and all its members need cut out of the GOP. The stupid "big tent" just made the GOP a circus.

It is time we get back to bacics and act like Republicans again!!!

How is this newsworthy?

Like its a shock that she would endorse republicans? Who cares what she thinks...she dragged us down into the property tax quagmire years ago and we still haven't been able to dig ourselves out. She needs to just go away and play on her farm with the other horses.

Her endorsement is worthless

The woman is an out-and-out lying crook ( look at her record as governor for details, start with the contracts she gave her husband's business firms), so being endorsed by her is a reason not to vote for the candidate. It's like Joan Crawford recommending a day care center.

Who REALLY Cares?

Give me a break. Who REALLY cares who Whitman endorses? She is rapidly is rapidly becoming known as one of THE worst Governors  in New Jersey for her fiscal irresponsibility so an endorsemen from her means nothing.
