Back in the early 1990's, it was tough to find a late night TV show that
didn't have at least one New Jersey joke as a staple. Then, for a time,
things changed - we were no longer the butt of the jokes. We were doing well as an economy, there weren't a host of scandals to report and people liked living in and visiting our state.
Unfortunately, all that has changed of late. The recent revelations of the
McGreevey threesome has raised our profile in the worst possible way. It's small comfort that New York is proving as adept at providing fodder to
the comics as we are. All this wouldn't mean much in the face of the
overriding issues of a a weakening economy and continuing war except that it serves to undermine people's respect for their elected officials and
their government. It challenges their faith in government's ability to
address the pressing challenges we face. Not to mention exposing the very
real and personal pain of the families involved.
We can, and should, expect better from our elected officials. It isn't okay
to let down family and constituents just because "everyone does it".
Personal standards are often a reflection of public standards. In New
Jersey, we have an important opportunity to show elected officials that we
are watching and we are engaged. Our first chance to show our elected
officials we are serious will be the June primary. I hope voters will
remember that the choices we have to make in June are just as important, if not more so, than the presidential primary we held in February. These
are the offices we will read about every day in our local papers and the
ones that will have a very real impact on our lives
Let's show those we elect to represent us that we are not going to ignore
their behavior and that we do care how they represent us. New Jersey is a great state. It doesn't deserve to make the life of the comic writers
easier.

In all seriousness
Please Madam Governor. In all seriousness, you named a rest stop after a shock jock, were photographed laughing hysterically as you patted down a black man who had been arrested, were the head of state while NJ was dragged through the mud in the national media over racial profiling, caused our state to incur billions in debt because of your gross mismanagement of pension monies, and then cut and ran to the EPA when things hit the fan, where you once again "distinguished" yourself. Do you really think these actions brought glory to the great Garden State?

I am 100% in agreement with you on this.

The Soprano State Is A Concerning Read!
If you read the book 'The Soprano State', which most here on this site probably has, you'll find that NJ matters are serious to the residents of this state, but funny to those in other states. I guess it's the old, 'It's funnier if it happens to them' rule.
Recalling Corzine is paramont, preventing Codey, Menendez, Andrews, Holt and Lesniak from getting re-elected is a prime concern.
Once the Court Jesters stop running the kingdom, the jokes will stop. When fools are in charge, foolish antics are the result.
And don't forget
the abolition of the Dept of Higher Education which has led to the mess in our State colleges and universities. Sharp move by Kate's mom.
Whitman's Nutty
Reading between the lines in her statement, Christie Whitman is basically saying that NJ has always been, and is now, a big joke:except for of course a brief time in the mid 1990's when she was running things.....What a freaking megalomaniac! (Not to mention that the country was too busy in the nineties laughing at OJ and Monica to laugh at Jersey) So, on one hand MS. Clean Air is giving us the backhanded compliment that our state is a joke (except for of course her time at the head) and aggrandizing herself. Thats a tough task in only 500 words. I must commend her for that, at least
--Saint Joe--
I wonder why she did this post
with all of her baggage. Its so oddly worded. She hates McGreevey that much? She needs to move on..Most people are able to separate McGreevey and his wife's follies from anything directly linked to Jersey.
harry houdini made an elephant "disappear"
by firing a pistol and misdirecting the audience's attention while the beast was led offstage.
whitman thinks that by misdirecting our attention with the rehash of an old, unsubstantiated (as of yet) sex scandal, we'll all forget her deplorable actions at EPA on behalf of her GOP masters.
yes, mcgreevey f'ed around, but to my knowledge, nobody died from it.
ironic that it was an elephant, though.
Whitman was horrible
As a former Whitman Admin employee, I have to tell you what you already know - CTW was the worst GOP Gov in the State's history.
She and her arrogant policies crippled our economy then and we are still feeling the repercussions now.
She picked elitists to the Supreme Court which eventually led to the pick of the numb nut that gave the State to the Dems.
She was/is horrible and her continued presence in NJ will only hurt her daughter.
Go away CTW - you are no longer welcome!
NJ Republicans are a laughing matter...
First I need to say that I am originally a registered Republican who recently crossed the line to vote for Obama in our primary. The fact that Hillary won so soundly here is just one clue as to why our state is in such sad shape. Basically it looks to me like 50% or more of the populace is satisfied to just pull the lever for whoever the Democratic bosses tell them to vote for. The basic problem here is not that we, who do care about the sad state of affairs in NJ, don't take politics seriously, the problem is that the Republican party does not attract any serious candidates who can motivate us to vote so we are left with the Democratic hack on one hand and the Republican sacrificial lamb on the other. As long as we have a defacto monopoly ruling our state, we will continue to have a corrupt broken system. There are a lot of people who will simply find it easier to move out of state rather than wait for eternity till there is a viable alternative to the current ruling class. One final thought, it occurs to me there are some nice parallels between CTW and GWB. Both had an opportunity early in their administartion to build a real sustainable majority and both instead squandered that opportunity by ruling with arrogance and contempt, tarnishing the Republican brand with out of control spending, and infecting the government with numerous incompetant cronies.
How refreshing to hear some
How refreshing to hear some words of reason finally. It’s always seemed to me that Governor Whitman got a free pass on her failings. Her totally irresponsible tax cuts and introduction of the travesty of underfunding state worker pensions laid the substantial groundwork for our current fiscal distress. Her social policies were not bad, but she was such a terrible manager that she seemed either to not notice or not care when the little boys and girls in her Governor’s Office regularly undercut them. I can trace only damage to my life to her reign, and can’t even imagine what 9-11 workers would say. Certainly few have the standing to dare moralizing so. It strikes me as especially unwise for her to have ventured there.
Well, it certainly is
"no laughing matter". It's actually kind of sad that CTW thinks she has standing to lecture today's New Jersey politicians, since a good part of the current fiscal crisis can be traced directly back to her irresponsible tax policies.
Between Christie and the Torch, this site is really giving us valuable input from two completely discredited pols.
What's wrong, McGreevey's too busy to participate? Hey, maybe if you act now, you could sign up Bush and Cheney for next year.
