With just twenty days to go before the April 7 filing deadline, a group of New Jersey Republican leaders are actively searching for another United States Senate candidate to challenge State Sen. Joseph Pennacchio and Ramapo College Professor Murray Sabrin in the June GOP primary. The race changed considerably two weeks ago when millionaire Anne Evans Estabrook abruptly quit the Senate race after suffering a minor stroke, and with the public disclosure yesterday of Pennacchio’s 1991 nationalist manifesto that has some party leaders in a panic.
Sources say that several GOP leaders approached State Sen. Diane Allen to run; Allen has been recovering from pneumonia and has reportedly declined.
Republicans are still not convinced that they can beat the four-term Democratic incumbent, 84-year-old Frank Lautenberg; the GOP hasn’t won a U.S. Senate seat in New Jersey since 1972, and haven’t scored a statewide victory since 1997 – 49 other states have elected a Republican to statewide office since that election. But efforts to recruit other candidates following Estabrook’s departure – like millionaire banker Joseph Buckalew, State Sen. Christopher Bateman, and U.S Marshal James Plousis – were unsuccessful, and for a short time it appeared that the GOP establishment was looking at Pennacchio’s nomination as inevitable.
The controversial manifesto and Pennacchio’s loss to Sabrin at the Gloucester County GOP convention last Saturday, has renewed interest in a third candidate by party insiders concerned that a huge Lautenberg win could affect GOP congressional candidates in the pivotal third and seventh district.

Joe P. Gets the Stinky Fish of the week
If the manifesto had come to light 2 weeks ago, surely someone in the Batemen/Buckalew camp probably would have given it a shot.
I'm sure Kyrillos, O'Toole, and others are kicking themselves now...they probably could have coasted to the nomination.
But let's be honest....Its not like Pennachio was going to win anyway, and this just confirms that a few months ahead of schedule.
Steve Forbes for Senate?
I know he didn't do to well in races before, but he wasn't involved in ethics scandals, he can self-finance, is moderate/centrist when it comes to social issues, and is a fiscal conservative. With the economy slowing down, Forbes' cred on that issue could easily beat Lautenberg.
Chris Smith would be a great candidate; he'd get a heavy portion of the veteran vote in the state. I don't think the pro-life issue would hurt him in a state wide race - he doesn't come from the most conservative district right now. If he can win in the 4th, he can win the state.
Dr. Sabrin for a change
That's sounds truly refreshing. No more GOP squabling for any candidates. At last, united GOP behind one candidate. Now, we have a shot in November.
It is unlikely that the
GOP will ever get behind Murray Sabrin.
And I know someone will respond by saying that this is why the NJGOP will lose in November. But you know what, what has Murray Sabrin done to help the NJGOP in the past. Where was Murray Sabrin when Tom Kean ran, or when Dough Forrester ran. All that Murray has accomplished is running one of the most divisive campaigns in recent history, where he has issued more press releases critical of Republicans than of Democrats.
Its going to be a lonely road for Murray Sabrin.
Possible Senate Candidates
Sen. Bill Baroni
Assemblyman Jon Bramnick
Sen. Jennifer Beck
Candy Straight
Sen. Diane Allen
Assemblyman Jay Webber
Former Mercer County Executive Bob Prunetti
Bergen County Clerk Kathe Donovan
Assemblywoman Allison Littelll McHose
Union County Republican Chairman Phil Morin
Wake up
Should anyone be surprised? I don't know what's worse the comments, the length, the use of the ridiculous "penn" name. Joe Penn's attempt to keep alive by pulling a Romney and say that was then and this is now is weak especially since he appears to have pour his heart and soul into this.
Either Joe or Murray are a "D" dream.
The people really hurt by this are all those greying dem congressmen who want to switch to the other side of the capitol. Frank's a cinch for another term. Only question is can he complete it?
The GOP would be foolish..
not to try something different and rally around Murray. and not for nothing Eric, using the excuse that Murray did not help Doug Forrester is pathetic and goes to show why the GOP is a minority party. Do you think Rahm Emmanuel cared whether a good and fresh Democratic candidate for Congress in 2006 helped John Kerry in 2004?
Forget memories of the past
It is time to concentrate on the present and the future. Forget the past. Learn from your mistakes in the past. Forrester, Kean, and others had their shot and could not do it. Let's forget about it and concentrate on the task before hand. That is elect a candidate who actually said that he wants to be a GOP candidate. Dr. Sabrin is it.
No
Rahm Emmanuel fieled numerous blue dog Democrats during the 2006 election, which was smart on his part. He was able to create a liberal majority, by electing moderate Democrats.
The GOP would have been smart to adopt such a strategy. Instead, the GOP ran candidates like Rick Santorum who end up losing, thereby costing the Republicans the majority.
May be its just me, but it doesn't make sense to run an ultra conservative candidate in New Jersey, which is a very blue state. It would make so much more sense to run a candidate in the mold of John McCain.
Will Murray Sabrin
criticize the down ticket candidates who don't agree with him on every single issue? Will he campaign with candidates who are not pro-life? Will he call on them to withdraw?
"Forget the past. Learn from your mistakes in the past."
"Forget the past. Learn from your mistakes in the past." This was a quote from a poster defending his or her support for Murray Sabrin. However, wasn't Sabrin a candidate for several offices and failed to be elected? So is it not hypocritical to tell people to forgo backing a potential candidates who lost only one election then turn around - in the same paragraph - and back a candidate who has lost numerous times? Are you serious? This guy couldn't get elected as a Republican, so he took his ball and ran to the Libertarians and got creamed and now is back. Give me a break.
Someone Needs To Step Up
A Republican needs to seriously step up and run. We need a third option.
I will start a write-in campaign for someone if nobody steps up, this is ridiculous; there has to be someone.
We are doomed
to lose with either Sabrin or Penn on the top of the ticket.
Time to draft Baroni!
Let's have a draft (not on tap)
I know this guy in Hoboken. He seems to be good. I also know this woman in Camden. She seems to be nice. I also know a couple of guys from Trenton, but I would not ask them to run.
I hate to say it but ...
... it's time to call Bret Schundler.
In this Easter season, I think his political resurrection is quite appropriate. Bret has a puncher's chance against Lautenberg if he returns to the conservative roots that propelled him to national prominence. Step up Bret, join the fray and meet your destiny!
Wisdom on the part of the Republicans.
It would be very wise at this point for the Republicans to get behind Murray.
Anything short of this, would continue to widen the gap between RINO's and Real Conservatives, and only continue the 7 year losing streak to the Democrats.
Murray obviously has the courage to do whats right not only for our party, but also for our state, and the nation as a whole. If the party even thinks of trying to find another "last minute candidate" it only reinforces the Democrats claim that we are hypocrites and our party is more concerned about personal egos and power, than they are about principles.
I know half of the Republicans in New Jersey don't want change, and enjoy the status quo, but the reality is the climate of the party nationally is starting to change. The "Good Ole Boys" of politics within the Republican Party in NJ are going to have to realize that the game is over and its time to pass on the torch to some new blood.
Ignorance, Stupidity, and Stubborness are surefire ways to guarantee the success of the Democrats come November. And trust me, the Dems will walk all over us in many races if we don't stop playing these petty little games of sharades, as the few political liberal elites within the party scramble to grasp onto whatever little bit of power they have left.
Get behind Murray, and we can win. Anything short of that, and we will lose horribly.
Hurry -- We Need to Find Another Hack!
The New Jersey GOP is a riot -- they absolutely MUST find a Republican who won't change anything, and fast. That seems to be the criterion: as long as you have no practical solutions for the coming $70 trillion entitlement tidal wave, as long as you think having troops in 130 countries is "conservative," and as long as you're a hack who poses absolutely no threat to the status quo, you're in.
On the other hand, if you're a fiscal conservative like Murray Sabrin, and on top of that you actually understand something about the Federal Reserve, the housing bubble, and the crisis we're now in, the Party has no interest. The GOP loves a guy like Pennacchio, who doesn't know the first thing about financial markets or the dollar. Meanwhile, Sabrin can actually explain what is happening and what needs to be done. And we can't have that!
Onward to bankruptcy!
Why
Why should I get behind Murray?
I agree with him on a lot issues to some degree, but there are some issues (e.g., the war) that I disagree with him on. Is Murray Sabrin going to kick me out of the Republican party? Because it seems like he would and I think Murray Sabrin's behavior during the campaign has turned off a lot of Republicans.
Tell me, what did Murray Sabrin gain by criticizing John McCain last week. Oh, he may have some scored some cheap points among conservatives in the primary, but lets think long term. The NJGOP Senate nominee will need the backing of the national party, and Murray will be unlikely to get it, if he continues to side with the Democrats, and Frank Lautenberg, on more of the issues than he does with John McCain and the Republican Party.
... it's time to call Bret Schundler.
That is a great idea Martin Two!
Bump!
Nice play on words Wally, I
Nice play on words Wally, I didn't catch it at first..ha.
Jim Saxton -a great canidate
Jim Saxton has a great record on defense ,the environment, and economic issues.
He is experienced in running successful campaigns, and an ethical legislator who is well respected on both sides of the aisle.
We only have to convince him to run.
What a disgrace
so we should all bow down to the NATIONAL PARTY? what the one thats ignored New Jersey for the better part of a generation? The one that threw away power with reckless spending and unnecessary war? The same one that wont dump Larry Craig after his nauseating exploits?
I dont bow to them, I don't bow to the state party what there is of it. All I bow to are conservative principles and common sense. Murray's got it, clearly Brown Armband Joe does not, and no fear of repudiation from failed national leadership will hold me from my beliefs.
Bob Schroeder Loves NJ!!
Any questions?
Phil Morin???
Why not somebody who knows what balls are? Dick la Rosa. LOL
Saxton?!
Health Issues are the reason he's retiring for Congress, why wouldn't they matter for US Senate?
That's a non-starter..
RUDY! RUDY!
What happened to all of the chatter about recruiting Rudy G.? Just sort of faded away.... ;-)
recruiting Allen
If state GOP leaders are getting in touch with Allen about running, then there is no other way to intepret this than as a slap in the face to Kelly and Myers, already declared candidates in a national race in the 3rd; choose one of them, and you avoid a debilitating intra-party conflict. This is a not-too-subtle gesture that both candidates aren't deemed top tier even by their own party establishment. I would be concerned about these two open seats no matter who is running against Lautenberg.
Makes no sense
As usual, Martian makes no sense. Contacting Allen is a slap in the face to the candidates in the 3rd? That may be the dumbest thing I have heard on this board. Oh, other than your crystal ball prediction that Dennison had one of the best run campaigns in the state - or that Bodine was going to win. Those were pretty dumb. Say hi to the Mad Hatter for me Alice.
slowly, clearly for theoc
Ah, the still-anonymous one, "theoc," he/she who predicted a double-digit win by Ferguson and who predicted Sherwood would be fine in Pa. No lengthy apology for Sagnip or the BurlCo GOP machine today?
Allen was asked by the GOP hierarchy in the state to run for Saxton's seat, and now second-tier candidates such as Myers and Kelly are running instead. Allen was once again asked by the GOP hierarchy to run for higher office -- nary a mention of Kelly or Myers -- and she declines. Do you need me to speak more slowly for you, theoc?
No
No Martian - I need you to speak the truth - for once. Again, I predicted the Ferguson race was going to be much closer than the 9-12 pts I predicted 6 months before the election. So if you are going to quote me, quote it all. Now, which GOP officials asked Diane to run? I know most of the county officials, and few wanted her as the nominee. Myers is far from second tier Alice. He raised nearly 300k in the first three months of this year - it took Adler 5 YEARS as a failed Senate candidate to accomplish that goal. So forgive me for filing your opinions in the toilet where they belong. And as Tom Petty told you Alice - "Don't come around here no more." Sorry it is not Timbuk3 but seeing no one with any clue has heard of them, it wouldn't have made any sense. Say hi to the tea pot for me.
Sabrin Will ALWAYS be a Loser
As I have said before, Sabrin is a little child, a egotistical wannabe who only cares about his own agenda. All Sabrin wants to do is cause problems.
He is a joke, waste of time and space, and oh yes, Murray, when you and your little underlings show up at the next Burlco full county committee meeting, dont just stand there glaring at every who brushes by you because they dont have the time for you and on that note, instead of your underlings forcing your flyers on people, save a tree because by the end of the meeting your resume was strewn mostly all over but into people's hands.
More Cowbell Please !!
