YOUNITY TEAM BACKS CHIEF EVERETT
IN HIS FEUD WITH MAYOR STACK
Vows To Take Hands Off Policy On Police DepartmentUnion City – The Younity Team for Union City Commission today announced its unequivocal support of Police Chief Charles Everett in his dispute with Mayor Brian Stack, who continues to interfere with the operation of the police department
Everett said yesterday in a television interview, that he needs to have the authority to run the department without the political interference of the mayor. The chief said Stack routinely tries to interfere with scheduling of officers, patrols and operations.
Younity Team leader Frank Scarafile said he supports Chief Everett and noted that it is well known that Stack – as public safety director on the Board of Commissioners – has tried to interfere in the operation of the police department to reward cops who support him and punish those who don’t.
“We know the burden that Chief Everett operates under and we are confident he can do a much better job of fighting crime without political interference from people like Brian Stack, who have no background in law enforcement, said Scarafile.
Scarafile noted that when the Younity Team kicked off its campaign last month, Stack ordered three police patrols cars sent to the Palisades Avenue press conference to disrupt the Younity Team’s message. He called the disruption of “typical hard-nosed tactics from the mayor.
“As with everything else in Union City, Mayor Stack tries to run the police department to advance his political agenda, not to serve the people, said Scarafile, a school superintendent in Bergen County who manages 150 people.
“The fact is Stack has never successfully managed anything except a political campaign, said Scarafile. “For him to try to interfere in the workings of the police department does nothing but compromise the integrity and effectiveness of public safety in this city.
Everett also said yesterday that Stack is trying to force him to retire.
Former Commission and Younity member Tina Yandolino said it is well known that Stack is trying to put someone he can control in charge of the department.
“Whenever politicians try to run police agencies, the result is usually bad, said Yandolino. “Crime is a major concern in Union City and Brian Stack has been a complete failure as a public safety director.
“When we are elected we will let the cops do their job without regard for politics. It’s tough enough to be a cop without being told who you can’t touch and who you are ordered to harass, added Yandolino.
