LAUTENBERG VOTES TO TAKE AWAY TOOLS TO TRACK DOWN TERRORISTS
Lawrenceville, NJ – Today, U.S. Senate candidate Dick Zimmer issued the following statement in response to Senator Frank Lautenberg’s vote against bipartisan legislation overhauling electronic surveillance rules aimed at tracking foreign terrorists.
“Even Barack Obama voted for the FISA bill because he believes it to be a law enforcement tool necessary to protect the country against terrorist attacks. However, for the sixth time, Frank Lautenberg chose to oppose bipartisan legislation that will modernize our nation's terrorist surveillance laws.
“Senator Lautenberg had the opportunity to join 22 Democratic colleagues in passing a bipartisan bill that respects privacy rights while protecting our citizens against terrorism. Instead, Senator Lautenberg chose to cast a dangerously irresponsible vote against the interest of our national security.”
This afternoon, the U.S. Senate passed the FISA Amendments of 2008 (H.R. 6304) by a vote 69 to 28. On June 20, 2008, it passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 293 to 129.
